Engagement is a signal, not a score. These episodes cover continuous listening, employee experience, and turning survey data into action people can actually feel.
All episodes and topicsThe strongest consensus across these thirteen conversations is that asking creates an obligation. Tracy Dodd reframes the familiar complaint precisely: survey fatigue is really action fatigue, and people tire of answering the same questions and seeing nothing change. Diane Smith states the rule directly, that if you are going to ask for feedback you have to show you are listening and adjusting. Catherine Mattice adds the publication step, arguing pulse surveys turn culture into a performance engine only when results are acted on and shared, including the unflattering parts. Kellie Wagner's version is that listening builds trust only when feedback visibly leads to action.
Second, they agree the annual survey is too slow to be strategic. Shari Chernack describes annual data as already dated by the time it is analysed, and argues listening has to flow continuously. Barbie Winterbottom makes the same case for frequent pulse checks over a once-yearly instrument.
Third, engagement is downstream of culture rather than identical to it. Mattice is explicit that a strong engagement score signals a healthy culture but is not the whole picture. Daniela Herrera sharpens this into a methodological point that recurs on this hub: the score matters less than who answered it, and which demographic groups stayed silent.
These leaders do not share a measurement model, and the differences are substantive. Mattice wants trust tracked as a KPI through behaviour rather than survey scores, watching surprise exits and informal coaching as leading indicators. Herrera wants the composition of responses treated as the primary signal. Robinson wants segmentation by career stage rather than age, arguing a one-size-fits-all engagement design actively accelerates attrition. Hickman wants variance analysed at manager level. Each is coherent, and they would produce different dashboards.
There is also a quieter disagreement about participation. Dodd reports that VNS Health offered no rewards at all and found transparency about survey mechanics and visible action planning outperformed incentives. That runs against the common practice of buying participation, and suggests low response rates are usually a trust problem wearing a logistics costume.
